Preparing Your Pressure Washer For the Cold Winter Months

Now that you have purchased and enjoyed your pressure washer during the warm months, it's time to get ready for the cold winter months. If you live in an areas where the temperature never goes below freezing you may not need to do anything, but check your owner manual for yearly maintenance. Taking care of your pressure washer before the cold sets in will save you time and money in the spring.

Most pressure washer parts are made of plastic, brass or aluminum and each of these materials are soft and will break as water is left inside and freezes. Even though you may have not used the pressure washer in a while it still may contain water behind valves that may freeze and break the unit.

The following is a basic list of steps to take with your washer to prepare it for the winter months. Always check with your owner's manual for specific information about winter storage.

1. Disconnect the wand and hold the valve open and turn upside down; blowing air from a portable air compressor through the wand will insure that the wand has no water in it. In some pressure washers the wand cannot be removed from the hose, if you have one of these skip to # 2.

2. Remove the hose from the unit and drain all the water from it, use an air compressor to blow air through the hose if you have one. Coil the hose up and tie it in a small circle and hang it up on a wall or put on a shelf to store.

3. Look in your manual or on the bottom of the pump see if it has a drain plug for the water chamber, make sure your have the right drain plug, some unit have oil to cool and lubricate the pump. Once you have taking out the drain plug make sure the unit it unplugged and turn the pump or motor a couple of time to make sure all of the water is out of the pump chamber. The pump may turn hard and it may take two people to do this step. Store the plug somewhere safe and don't put it back in the pump, this will insure that no water will collect in the bottom of the pump.

4. If you have a soap or cleaning agent dispenser remove all the liquid and rinse out the container with water, put the liquid soap in a storage bottle and store it in the house to be used next year.

5. Now I recommend covering the unit with a small tarp or a heavy garbage bag to keep the dirt and dust off the unit. If you store it outside make sure you use a tarp and tie it on very well or us a couple of bungee cords. Make sure to store you pressure washer by itself and do not stack thing on top of it.

6. Now some unit have a built in hot water heater, use the same steps in #3 to drain the water from the heating chamber.

If you decide to use your pressure washer during the winter, don't forget to go through these steps again to make sure there is no water in the unit that can freeze and cost you big time repairs. Even if you have a heated garage or storage unit I still recommend preparing your unit for winter. A little work now and some tender care of your pressure washer will ensure years of care free use and saving in time and money. A power drill is not a complicated device. But with all power tools, safety needs to be respected. Imagine having a drill bit snap and end up lodged in your eye. 1. Don't wear long sleeves or loose clothing when drilling. Depending on the type of drill, a piece of clothing caught in the bit and wind up clothing extremely fast. Having your sleeve caught in the drill will cause extreme amounts of pain when there is no more sleeve left to get tangled.

2. Using a dust mask can help prevent you from inhaling your project. Even something as simple as wood can cause pain and bleeding in your respiratory tract.

3. As a general rule, always make sure your work is clamped down securely. Having a piece of metal or wood kick out and a drill bit go in to your leg would not be a pleasant experience.

4. Don't force the drill to drill. Instead, let the machine do its job. This goes for sanding as well.

5. You should always start off very slow and work up to a higher speed. Starting off fast is only going to have the drill bit dance around and end up other than in your work.

6. And finally, take your time. The number one reasons accidents happen in the shop is from people rushing. If it takes 2 minutes to drill through a piece of sheet metal, don't try to get it done in 30 seconds.

The Three Most Important Tools For A Fire Sprinkler Fitter

Unique tools are required by every professional trade in the world. Fire sprinkler fitters are no exception. We typically use a large variety of tools over the course of a single work day. The average office employee would be quite shocked to see exactly how many tools we carry on our work trucks. We use power tools, hand tools, and makeshift tools. Improper use of some of our power tools can critically hurt or kill a worker.

The most used tool for a pipe fitter is the common pipe wrench. Steel pipe wrenches were the earliest form of wrenches available. Pipe fitter's world-wide rejoiced when the manufacturers finally crafted them out of aluminum. The new aluminum wrenches are much lighter in weight. They are easier to carry all day long and a worker expels less energy by doing so. However, they are more expensive and susceptible to cracking.

If a new worker abuses a set of aluminum wrenches, the construction foreman will usually make him or her carry steel wrenches for a few weeks. After carrying steel wrenches for two weeks straight, a new apprentice will be very thankful to switch back to the aluminum ones again. He will never again abuse them. If longevity is a concern, then buy steel wrenches as they are much tougher than aluminum ones.

The most often used tool by a sprinkler fitter is a set of pliers. You will always find pliers stuffed into their back pocket. Specifically, we us a model called "tongue and groove".

Pipe fitters in the Southern CA area favor one brand far and above all others. The plier we prefer has a signature blue handle and is made by Channel Lock. This particular brand is a strong household and job site name. Fitters on the job often say: "Where are my Channel Locks? It's an easy fix; just give me my Channel Locks." Ever since I joined the trade, I have never heard the term pliers used. It's always Channel Locks.

The reliability of Channel Lock tools has earned them the trust of an entire region of workers and contractors. They might be more expensive but they are easily worth their price. Higher priced tools are usually higher quality tools. Your workers will appreciate them. A plier that is easily worth its weight in gold is the Channel Lock brand. Carrying two pair is common for most fitters.

Outside of pliers and pipe wrenches, there is another tool that is necessary for a sprinkler fitter: the Rigid 300 pipe machine. They cost anywhere from ,100 used to ,700 brand new. Depending on additional accessories, the price will vary. The safety pedal is a requirement, and the oiler a necessity. Another great addition is a set of transport wheels. They make it easier for a solo worker to transport the machine. Without the wheels, it will be difficult to move the machine to a new location.

These are the toughest machines I have ever used. The motor operates at a single, slow speed. It runs in both forward and reverse mode. It is almost impossible to switch the machine from one direction to the other with one swipe. There is an internal mechanism that prevents this. Going from forward to reverse without first allowing the machine to come to a complete stop is dangerous and can potentially damage the motor.

The Rigid's one speed motor operates at an extremely powerful torque. It is always advisable to never wear loose clothing when operating this machine. The Rigid 300 is potentially a deadly machine, especially in the hands of a novice. The machines' motor is so powerful that it can easily tear off an arm or a leg. To prevent potential injury or death, Rigid designed the machine to require a properly installed foot pedal in order to operate. It will not operate unless the worker has his or her foot on the pedal. To turn off the machine in case of an emergency, all a worker need do is remove his or her foot from the pedal.

These three tools will always be in close proximity to a sprinkler fitter. These tools are vital to the daily productivity of every sprinkler fitter. They are definitely the "tools of the trade" for every fitter.

The Makita 2012NB Review:

The Makita 2012NB is a relatively compact thickness planer. It is light weight compared to other brands, which makes it easy to transport to and from the jobsite or just around your home shop- not to mention the ease of storage.

The Makita cutting blades are dual sided, as is common with most brands, but are very narrow. They are intended to be used for cutting until dull and then tossed out and replaced. And since the cutting head has only 2 blades vs. the three blades on other models- replacement may be cheaper (if they in fact last as long as a three bladed system). The changing of blades on the 2012NB is pretty easy and shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. The cutting head moves up and down, thus allowing a permanent feed table and rollers to handle longer lumber.

This tool has a 15 amp motor with a no-load RPM of about 8500. It is actually very quiet when compared to other brands like DeWalt and Ridgid. It runs quietly at a low 83 decibels. One nice feature is the indicator light that shows when the machine is plugged in (this is a good safety feature to alert you prior to changing blades).

The Makita has about a 12 inch width capacity and a little over a 6 inch depth range. Using the clearly illustrated cutting depth gauge is a must. Because the tool is based in the metric system the adjustments are about 2milimeters instead of the more standard 1/16th of an inch.

As another important point, you should look into using a dust control system. This will help keep your tool and your shop much cleaner and thus safer and better quality work.

If you are doing any sort of fine woodworking like cabinet or furniture building, you really need to consider using a thickness planer. With the help of jigs and a few other hand tools like a router, it can even substitute for a jointer. There are a number of brands out there that give you different options and value so do a little research before you buy a thickness planer.
